Trolleys

Whilst waiting for Mrs Pig to emerge from a super-duper-market the repeating lines caught my eye.

But why are they call shopping trolleys
in the UK and Australia and shopping carts, carriages, bascarts, baskets or buggys in the U.S.?
There are certainly not trams!

Discuss!
